Case IH 2655 – ZTC (ZF Transmission Controller): Short circuit to ground at clutch KV

Issue description

The controller has detected that the measured resistance value of the KV clutch solenoid valve circuit is out of limits (the voltage at the KV valve is too low). This means the electrical circuit that controls the forward direction clutch is shorted to the vehicle's ground, preventing the transmission from properly engaging forward gears.

Check the cause

  1. Visually inspect the wiring harness and connectors between the ZTC (Transmission Controller) and the transmission control valve block for chafed wires rubbing against the chassis (vehicle ground).

  2. Disconnect the harness at both the TCU and the KV solenoid. Use a multimeter to check for continuity between the KV signal wire and the vehicle ground. Continuity indicates a defective, shorted harness.

  3. Verify that the KV cable/connector is not defective and making cross-contact with another regulator output of the TCU.

  4. Measure the internal resistance of the KV clutch solenoid valve. If the resistance is near zero ohms, the solenoid has an internal short.

  5. If the wiring and the solenoid both test perfectly fine, check the ZTC/TCU regulator for an internal defect.

Repair steps

  1. Power Down

    Turn off the machine, engage the parking brake, and disconnect the battery to prevent electrical spikes.

  2. Locate the Valve Block

    Locate the electro-hydraulic control valve block on the side or top of the ZF transmission.

  3. Disconnect the Solenoid

    Remove the electrical connector specifically routed to the KV (Forward) clutch solenoid valve.

  4. Isolate the Short

    Based on your diagnostic checks, if the wiring harness is shorted to ground, trace the harness back to the ZTC and repair the chafed wire or replace the transmission harness section.

  5. Replace the Solenoid

    If the solenoid failed the resistance test, unbolt the KV solenoid valve from the transmission control block. Clean the mounting surface, lubricate the O-rings on the new solenoid with clean transmission fluid, and install the new valve. Torque the mounting bolts to OEM specifications.

  6. Reassemble and Test

    Reconnect the electrical connector, reconnect the battery, and clear the inactive fault codes from the ZTC. Start the machine and test forward gear engagement to ensure the clutch calibrates and operates smoothly.
