Case IH 2658 – ZTC: Range clutch K2 is shorted to power
Issue description
The system has detected a short circuit to battery voltage on the electrical circuit that controls the proportional solenoid valve for the K2 clutch (2nd speed/gear clutch).
Applies to these machines
7 machines- Steiger T4B
- Steiger
- Farmall Pro series (95U, 105U, 115U)
- 856C AWD
- 836D
- 845B
- Farmlift 635 Pro
Check the cause
Check the wiring harness running between the ZTC (Transmission Controller) and the transmission control valve block for chafing, melted insulation, or pinched wires that could cause a short to battery voltage.
Inspect the connectors at both the ZTC and the K2 solenoid valve for corrosion, moisture, or bent pins.
Test the K2 proportional solenoid valve coil for an internal short circuit using a multimeter.
Repair steps
Disconnect Power
Disconnect the machine's battery to prevent further electrical damage during testing and repair.
Locate the Valve Block
Locate the transmission control valve block on the transmission housing. Identify the specific proportional solenoid valve designated for clutch K2 (2nd speed).
Isolate the Short
Disconnect the wiring harness from the K2 solenoid. Use a multimeter to check if the short to battery voltage is present on the harness side or internal to the solenoid coil.
Repair Wiring or Replace Solenoid
If the harness is shorted to a power source, trace the wire back to the ZTC and repair or replace the damaged section of the harness. If the harness tests good but the solenoid is internally shorted, remove the retaining hardware and replace the K2 solenoid valve.
Reassemble and Clear Codes
Reconnect the harness and battery. Use a diagnostic service tool or the machine's diagnostic menu to clear the stored 2658 fault code.
Test Operation
Start the machine and perform a test drive, ensuring the transmission shifts smoothly into 2nd gear (K2 clutch engagement) without triggering the fault code.
