Case IH 2664 – ZTC: Forward direction clutch (KV) shorted to power

Issue description

The circuit controlling the Forward direction clutch (KV) is shorted to power. The transmission controller detects battery voltage on the KV clutch solenoid circuit when it is not being commanded, or the voltage is abnormally high. This prevents proper modulation of the forward clutch, resulting in a loss of forward drive, erratic shifting, or the transmission defaulting to neutral.

Check the cause

  1. Clear the code and cycle the ignition key to verify if the fault returns immediately, indicating a hard electrical short.

  2. Disconnect the wiring harness at the ZTC module and transmission control valve block to inspect the KV clutch solenoid wiring for chafed insulation, pinched wires, or melted loom touching a constant power supply.

  3. Measure the resistance of the KV forward clutch solenoid using a multimeter (typically 10 to 30 ohms) and check for an open circuit between the power terminal and solenoid body.

  4. With the solenoid disconnected and key ON, measure voltage at the harness connector for the KV solenoid in Neutral; battery voltage indicates a harness short or internal ZTC short.

Repair steps

  1. Disconnect Power

    Turn off the machine and disconnect the negative battery cable to prevent electrical damage during the repair.

  2. Access the Valve Block

    Locate the transmission control valve block, typically mounted on the side or top of the ZF transmission housing, and identify the KV (Forward) clutch solenoid.

  3. Repair the Wiring

    If diagnostics pointed to a harness short, locate the damaged section of the wire. Cut out the melted or chafed section, splice in a new section of wire using solder, seal it with marine-grade heat-shrink tubing, and secure the harness away from heat sources or sharp chassis edges.

  4. Replace the Solenoid

    If the KV solenoid is internally shorted, clean the area around the transmission valve block, disconnect the electrical connector, remove the retaining bolts or snap ring, and pull the faulty solenoid straight out. Discard the old O-rings, lubricate the new O-rings with clean transmission fluid, insert the new solenoid, and torque the retaining fasteners to OEM specifications.

  5. Reassemble and Calibrate

    Reconnect the battery, clear the fault codes using a diagnostic scan tool, and run a transmission clutch calibration routine via the machine's display or service tool so the ZTC can learn the fill time of the new KV solenoid.

  6. Test Drive

    Operate the machine in forward and reverse to ensure smooth engagement and verify that code 2664 does not return.
