Case IH 2665 – ZTC Controller: Short circuit to battery voltage at clutch KR

Issue description

The transmission control module has detected a short circuit to battery voltage on the electrical circuit that controls the Reverse direction clutch (Clutch KR) proportional valve. The transmission will typically default to neutral or a limp home mode to prevent unintended movement or clutch slippage.

Applies to these machines

  • Steiger T4B
  • 836D
  • 856C
  • F106.6
  • Farmlift 632
  • LM6.32
  • 621
  • 721
  • 821
  • 921

Check the cause

  1. Check the external harness: Disconnect the cable from the ZTC to the gearbox and test the KR valve circuit for continuity to battery voltage. Voltage presence indicates a defective external harness.

  2. Check the valve resistance: Measure the resistance of the Clutch KR proportional valve/regulator at the transmission housing connector to identify an internal defect or short.

  3. Check the internal harness: If external harness and valve resistance test fine, inspect the internal wire harness of the gearbox for melted insulation or shorts to power.

  4. Perform a secondary pressure test: If electrical tests pass but the clutch slips or behaves erratically, check the main pressure and the specific pressure at the Clutch KR test port (M14x1.5 thread port).

Repair steps

  1. Disconnect Power

Turn off the battery master switch to prevent further electrical damage.

  2. Harness Repair

If the short to power was isolated to the external harness between the ZTC and the transmission, locate the chafed section of the wiring loom. Splice and heat-shrink the damaged wires, or replace the harness section.

  3. Valve Replacement

Drain the transmission fluid if required to access the electro-hydraulic control valve body. Remove the transmission control valve cover, disconnect the internal wiring harness from the Clutch KR proportional valve, remove the retaining bolts and extract the faulty Clutch KR solenoid/valve. Install the new proportional valve and torque to OEM specifications.

  4. Internal Harness Replacement

If the internal transmission harness is brittle or shorted, replace it while the valve cover is removed.

  5. Reassembly

Reinstall the valve cover with a new gasket. Refill the transmission with the approved fluid (e.g., Akcela).

  6. Calibration

Reconnect the battery, clear the ZTC fault codes, and perform a transmission clutch calibration procedure if required by the specific machine model.
