Case IH 2673 – ZTC Controller: Configuration error - invalid variant parameter configuration
Issue description
Indicates a software and hardware mismatch on the machine's Controller Area Network (CAN bus). The control module has been programmed with a specific set of parameters (variant coding) that either does not match the physical hardware, has become corrupted, or was incorrectly programmed.
Applies to these machines
4 machines- Steiger T4B
- Case IH Steiger series (AFS Connect models)
- Case IH Magnum series
- Case IH Optum series
Check the cause
Verify recent service history to determine if the ZTC controller, armrest controller, or display was recently replaced or flashed with new firmware, which may have caused a missed step in variant coding.
Check battery and system voltage to ensure the batteries are fully charged and the alternator is outputting correctly, as low voltage during startup can cause controllers to misread their NVRAM.
Perform a CAN bus communication check using a diagnostic tool to ensure the ZTC is successfully communicating with the rest of the tractor's modules and can detect all hardware nodes.
Repair steps
Stabilize Voltage
Connect a battery maintainer to the tractor to ensure voltage does not drop during the programming procedure.
Connect Diagnostic Tool
Plug the Case IH EST into the tractor's 9-pin diagnostic port.
Read Module Data
Access the ZTC Controller menu and read the current variant configuration.
Compare to Build Sheet
Compare the programmed parameters to the tractor's actual physical build (e.g., number of rear remotes, suspended vs. standard axle, transmission type).
Reconfigure / Reprogram
Select the "Configuration" or "Variant Coding" tab in the EST software. Input the correct parameters that match the physical tractor.
Flash and Save
Execute the configuration save.
Power Cycle
Turn the ignition key to the OFF position. Wait at least 30 to 60 seconds for the ZTC module to completely power down and write the new configuration to its memory.
Clear Codes
Turn the key back ON, connect the EST, and clear the 2673 fault code. Verify the code changes from "Active" to "Stored" or disappears entirely.
Parts you might need
(1)ZTC Controller / Cab Power Distribution Module
Varies heavily by specific tractor model and serial number break. If a new ZTC controller is purchased, it will arrive 'blank' and the step-by-step variant configuration procedure MUST be performed before the tractor will operate correctly.
