Case IH 2674 – TCU / TECU: High Transmission Oil Temperature

Issue description

The transmission control system has detected that the transmission fluid temperature has reached or exceeded 95°C (203°F). To protect the transmission from catastrophic thermal damage, the controller will automatically reduce the vehicle's speed and prompt the operator to either reduce the engine load or stop the machine entirely until the fluid cools down.

Check the cause

  1. Check the transmission/hydraulic oil level using the dipstick or sight glass to ensure it is not low or overfilled

  2. Inspect the transmission oil cooler and radiator fins at the front of the tractor for blockages from chaff, dirt, or mud

  3. Verify the engine cooling fan/fan clutch is engaging properly when the tractor gets hot

  4. Inspect the transmission filter and suction screen/strainer for clogs or restrictions

  5. Test the transmission temperature sensor and inspect its wiring harness for shorts to ground or broken wires

Repair steps

  1. Cool Down & Drain

    Safely park the machine on level ground. Allow the transmission to cool completely. If the oil smells burnt or is heavily discolored, drain the transmission fluid into a clean receptacle.

  2. Clean the Strainer

    Remove the access plate (often located on the lower right side of the transmission case, near the sensor) and pull out the transmission suction strainer. Clean it thoroughly of any metal shavings or debris.

  3. Replace the Filter

    Remove and replace the spin-on transmission oil filter(s).

  4. Replace the Temperature Sensor

    Locate the transmission oil temperature sensor (typically threaded into the lower side of the transmission housing or near the valve body). Disconnect the electrical connector. Unthread the old sensor (have a catch pan ready as some residual fluid will leak). Install the new OEM temperature sensor and torque to spec. Reconnect the wiring harness.

  5. Refill and Bleed

    Refill the transmission with fresh, OEM-approved hydraulic/transmission fluid (e.g., Case IH Akcela Hy-Tran).

  6. Clear Codes and Test

    Use a diagnostic scan tool to clear the TCU fault codes. Run the tractor under a heavy draft load to verify that the temperature gauge remains in the normal operating range and the code does not return.
