Case IH 2675 – Transmission Control Unit (TCU) or Tractor Electronic Control Unit (TECU): Transmission Oil Temperature Over-Temperature

Issue description

The transmission oil temperature has reached a critically high level, specifically equaling or exceeding 98°C (208°F). When this condition is detected, the control module actively intervenes to protect the transmission from catastrophic internal damage by reducing the vehicle's speed and prompting the operator to stop the machine.

Check the cause

  1. Verify Actual Temperature: Use a diagnostic tool or an infrared thermometer to verify the actual temperature of the transmission housing. If the physical temperature is normal (well below 98°C / 208°F) but the sensor reads high, the sensor or wiring is at fault.

  2. Check Fluid Levels: Ensure the transmission oil is at the correct level on the dipstick or sight glass. Low fluid levels can cause rapid overheating.

  3. Inspect the Cooling System: Check the transmission oil cooler and radiator for blockages (dirt, chaff, debris) that would restrict airflow.

  4. Wiring and Connector Check: Inspect the wiring harness leading to the transmission oil temperature sensor for chafing, shorts to ground, or open circuits. Check the sensor connector for corrosion or pushed-out pins.

Repair steps

  1. Park the machine on a level surface, engage the parking brake, and turn off the engine.

  2. Allow the transmission fluid to cool completely to avoid burn hazards.

  3. Locate the transmission oil temperature sensor on the transmission housing or control valve block.

  4. Clean the area around the sensor to prevent dirt from entering the transmission.

  5. Disconnect the electrical connector from the sensor.

  6. Place a drain pan underneath the sensor location to catch any residual fluid.

  7. Unthread and remove the faulty sensor.

  8. Install the new OEM sensor and tighten to the manufacturer's specified torque.

    Ensure the O-ring or thread sealant is properly seated.

  9. Reconnect the electrical harness.

  10. Top off the transmission fluid to replace any lost during the swap.

  11. Start the tractor, allow it to reach operating temperature, and verify that the fault code clears and there are no leaks.
