Case IH 2677 (517974.12) - DEC – Transmission Control Unit (TCU): Synchro F2 uncommanded disengagement
Issue description
The Synchro F2 (Forward 2 / Reverse 1 synchronizer) has physically disengaged without receiving a command to do so. This is triggered when the position sensor reading suddenly indicates the synchronizer has slipped out of its engaged position while under load or during operation.

Check the cause
Verify the transmission/hydraulic fluid is at the correct level and free of debris or burnt odors. Low fluid can cause pressure drops that allow the synchronizer to slip out of gear.
Locate the Synchro F2-R1 position sensor and the Synchro F2 solenoid (typically located on the right-hand side or top of the transmission housing). Inspect the 3-pin connector for corrosion, pushed-out pins, or wire chafing.
Check for a steady 5V reference supply and a good ground at the Synchro F2-R1 position sensor harness. Monitor the sensor's signal voltage while manually or electronically commanding the shift to ensure a smooth voltage sweep without dropouts.
Check the hydraulic pressure at the transmission control valve block for the F2 circuit to ensure the solenoid is receiving and holding adequate pressure to keep the synchronizer engaged.
Attempt to run a full transmission calibration via the electronic service tool or the tractor's enhanced keypad. If the calibration fails on the F2/R1 synchronizer, note the specific calibration error code (e.g., U-codes) to determine if the issue is electrical or mechanical.
Repair steps
Secure the Machine
Park the tractor on a level surface, lower all implements, engage the parking brake, and turn off the engine.
Access the Components
Clean the right-hand side and top of the transmission housing to prevent dirt from entering the system.
Replace the Sensor (If Electrical)
If diagnostics point to a erratic sensor, disconnect the 3-pin connector, unbolt the Synchro F2-R1 position sensor, and install the new potentiometer.
Replace the Solenoid (If Hydraulic)
If the F2 solenoid is sticking or failing under load, remove the retaining bolt/bracket on the transmission control valve, extract the F2 solenoid, lubricate the O-rings on the new solenoid with clean transmission fluid, and install it.
Mechanical Repair (If Internal)
If electrical and hydraulic tests pass but the synchronizer still physically disengages, the transmission must be split. The internal Synchro F2-R1 assembly (shift forks, synchronizer rings, and hub) must be inspected for excessive wear and replaced as per the OEM teardown procedure.
Reassembly & Calibration
After replacing any parts, reconnect all harnesses. Top off the transmission fluid. You must perform a transmission calibration procedure so the TCU can relearn the engagement and disengagement thresholds of the new sensor/solenoid or mechanical parts.
