Case IH 2681-02 - ACM – ACM: Joystick 1 Y-Axis Detent Position Status - Data erratic, intermittent, or incorrect
Issue description
The control module is receiving an unstable, fluctuating, or corrupted signal from the joystick's Y-axis detent position sensor/switch. This means the sensor is reporting data that falls outside the expected parameters or is dropping out intermittently, often pointing to a failing internal switch, a loose connection, or a wiring harness issue.

Check the cause
Connect an Electronic Service Tool (EST) to the 9-pin diagnostic connector and monitor live data for the 'Joystick 1 Y-Axis Detent Position Status' while moving the joystick and wiggling the armrest wiring harness to see if the signal drops out.
Remove the armrest covers and visually inspect the wiring harness between the multi-function handle and the ACM for pinched wires, chafing, or wear.
Disconnect the joystick and ACM connectors and inspect the pins for corrosion, moisture, or bent terminals.
Use a multimeter to test the continuity of the Y-axis detent circuit wires from the joystick connector to the ACM, checking for shorts to ground or shorts to power.
Verify if there are other active J1939 communication codes (such as SPN 51 FMI 2). If multiple codes are present, the issue may be the CAN bus network rather than the joystick itself.
Repair steps
Power Down
Turn off the machine, remove the key, and disconnect the battery to prevent electrical shorts during repair.
Access the Components
Remove the necessary plastic trim and panels on the right-hand armrest console to expose the multi-function handle base and the Armrest Control Module (ACM).
Clean and Re-seat Connections
If the diagnostic checks revealed loose or dirty pins, apply electrical contact cleaner to the connectors, let them dry, and securely re-seat them. Reconnect the battery and test to see if the code clears.
Replace the Joystick Assembly
If the wiring is intact and the connections are good, the internal Y-axis detent switch/sensor has failed. Disconnect the main harness from the base of the joystick, remove the mounting hardware securing the joystick to the armrest frame, install the new joystick assembly, secure the hardware, and plug in the electrical connector.
Reassembly
Reinstall the armrest trim panels.
Calibration
Reconnect the battery and power on the machine. Use the EST or the in-cab display (IntelliView/AFS Pro) to clear the fault codes. Perform the joystick/multi-function handle calibration procedure as outlined in the service manual to ensure the ACM recognizes the new detent positions.
