Case IH 2682 – ZTC (Transmission Control Module): Transmission output shaft speed sensor, measured speed is higher than limit
Issue description
This fault indicates that the transmission control unit is receiving a frequency signal from the transmission output shaft speed sensor that exceeds the maximum plausible RPM limit for the current gear, engine speed, or operating condition.

Check the cause
Verify Operating Conditions (Operational Overspeed cause): Confirm with the operator if the tractor was coasting downhill or being pushed by a heavy load when the code triggered. If so, clear the code and test drive; it may have been a legitimate overspeed event.
Inspect the Harness (Wiring Issues cause): Trace the wiring from the output shaft speed sensor to the ZTC module. Look for chafed insulation, pinched wires, or water ingress at the connector.
Check Sensor Tip (Metal Debris cause): Remove the sensor and inspect the magnetic tip. If it is covered in thick metallic 'fuzz,' clean it off. Excessive metal debris may indicate internal transmission wear.
Test Sensor Output (Sensor Failure cause): Using a multimeter (set to AC voltage or Hz) or an oscilloscope, back-probe the sensor while the machine is moving. The signal should be a smooth, consistent frequency that rises linearly with ground speed. Erratic spikes indicate a failing sensor.
Repair steps
Preparation
Park the machine on a level surface, engage the parking brake, lower all implements, and turn off the engine.
Locate the Sensor
Locate the output shaft speed sensor on the transmission housing (usually positioned near the rear of the transmission block, reading off the final output gear).
Disconnect
Unplug the electrical connector from the sensor.
Clean the Area
Thoroughly clean the housing around the sensor base with brake cleaner to prevent dirt from falling into the transmission.
Removal
Remove the retaining bolt (typically a 10mm or 12mm hex) and carefully twist and pull the sensor out of the bore.
Installation
Lubricate the O-ring on the new sensor with clean transmission fluid. Insert the sensor into the bore, ensuring it seats fully without forcing it.
Secure
Install and tighten the retaining bolt to the OEM torque spec (usually snug, do not overtighten as the sensor body is often plastic).
Reconnect
Plug the wiring harness back in, ensuring the weather-pack seal clicks into place.
Clear Codes
Turn the key to the ON position and use the tractor's AFS display or a diagnostic tool to clear the stored ZTC fault codes.
Test Drive
Operate the tractor through all gears to verify the speedometer reads correctly and the fault does not return.
