2684 (2859.12) - DEC

Case IH 2684 (2859.12) - DEC – DEC / TCU: SMP Intervention - ROM check of SMP failed

Issue description

Fatal internal microprocessor error where the ROM data modification check fails, pointing to internal memory corruption or electrical damage to the control unit (SPN 2859: Machine Data Configuration 2, FMI 12: Bad intelligent device or component).

Applies to these machines

  • MAXXUM T4E
  • VESTRUM CVX

Check the cause

  1. Verify that the control unit is receiving proper voltage, as power loss or electrical damage can trigger ROM checksum errors

  2. Check the wiring harness leading to the DEC/TCU for shorts or electrical damage that could have caused a power surge to the module

  3. Clear the code and perform a key-cycle to see if the ROM checksum error is a permanent hard fault or a transient glitch

Repair steps

  1. Replace control module

If verifying power and ground to the module does not resolve the issue, replace the affected control module (DEC or TCU).

  2. Reprogram control module

Perform OEM dealer programming (EOL / End of Line programming) on the replacement controller to flash the correct ROM data and Machine Data Configuration for the specific tractor/combine.

Parts you might need

(1)
  • DEC (Diesel Engine Controller) / Engine Control Module (ECM) or TCU (Transmission Control Unit)

Requires OEM dealer programming (EOL / End of Line programming) to flash the correct ROM data and Machine Data Configuration.
