Case IH 2686 – Zone Tractor Controller (ZTC): CAN message EEC1 timeout

Fault code 2686 indicates a CAN message EEC1 timeout, meaning the receiving module on the CAN network expected to receive the EEC1 message update within a specific millisecond timeframe, but the message did not arrive. This is logged specifically by the ZTC when it loses communication with the Engine ECU over the CAN bus network.

   Determine if the fault is currently active or inactive to identify intermittent connections or temporary voltage drops

   Verify the power supply to the Zone Tractor Controller (ZTC) by checking the 7.5A fuse (F-103 / VPI 1)

   Use the Case IH Electronic Service Tool (EST) to check overall CAN network health for accompanying timeout codes (EEC2, EEC3, CCVS)

   Visually inspect the wiring harness and connectors between the Engine ECU and the ZTC, ensuring connector locks are not broken

   Power Down

   Turn off the key switch and disconnect the battery to prevent electrical spikes during harness testing.

   Inspect Connectors

   Disconnect the harness connectors at both the Engine ECU and the ZTC. Inspect the pins for corrosion, moisture, or pins that have pushed back into the connector body.

   Check Connector Locks

   Verify the connector locks securely hold the connectors in a locked position. Replace the connectors immediately if the locks are broken, as this is a primary cause of intermittent CAN timeouts.

   Test CAN Wiring

   Using a multimeter, test the CAN High and CAN Low wires between the ECU and ZTC for open circuits (broken wires), short circuits to vehicle ground, and short circuits to battery voltage.

   Repair Harness

   If damaged wiring is found, repair the wiring harness and retest the circuit.

   EST Verification

   If the wiring and connectors are in good condition, reconnect the modules and connect the Electronic Service Tool (EST). Monitor the CAN network traffic to determine if the Engine ECU is failing to transmit the EEC1 message, or if the ZTC has an internal failure preventing it from receiving the message. Replace the faulty module if an internal hardware failure is confirmed.
