Issue description

The controller has stopped receiving the PTCTL2 (Powertrain Control 2) data message over the Controller Area Network (CAN) bus within the expected timeframe. This is a communication failure, typically between the Engine Control Module (ECM) and the transmission controller, meaning the transmission is not receiving necessary torque, speed, or powertrain status data from the engine.

Check the cause

  1. Check for accompanying CAN timeout codes (such as PTCTL1, ECMDAT, or ENGHRRV) to determine if the entire CAN bus network is down rather than a single module failure.

  2. Verify ZTC power and ground by checking the fuses supplying the ZTC module (e.g., 5A or 7.5A switched key fuse like F-103).

  3. Perform a CAN Bus Resistance Test with the battery disconnected by measuring resistance between CAN High and CAN Low at the diagnostic connector (should read approximately 60 ohms).

  4. Visually inspect the wiring harness running between the Engine Control Module (ECM) and the ZTC for chafing, pinch points, or rodent damage.

Repair steps

  1. Disconnect Power

    Turn off the ignition and disconnect the negative battery cable to prevent electrical spikes.

  2. Inspect Connectors

    Locate the ZTC module (usually located in the cab or under the right-hand console depending on the model) and the ECM (mounted on the engine). Disconnect the main harness connectors for both.

  3. Clean and Reseat

    Inspect the connector pins for corrosion, moisture, or pins that have been pushed back into the housing. Clean the contacts with a high-quality electrical contact cleaner and apply dielectric grease.

  4. Repair Wiring

    If the CAN resistance test failed, trace the CAN High and CAN Low wires between the ECM and ZTC. Repair any broken, shorted, or corroded sections of the harness using proper soldering and heat-shrink techniques.

  5. Reassemble and Clear Codes

    Reconnect all modules and the battery. Connect a Case IH Electronic Service Tool (EST) to clear the inactive fault codes.

  6. Test Operation

    Start the tractor and verify that the CVT engages and operates smoothly in both forward and reverse. If the wiring is perfectly intact and the code immediately returns, the ZTC or ECM may require a software flash/update or replacement by an authorized dealer.
