Case IH 2696 – ZTC: Transmission oil filter bypass valve is open with normal or high transmission oil temperature

The transmission controller has detected that the transmission oil filter bypass valve has opened. Because the system notes that the transmission oil temperature is normal or high, it rules out the possibility of cold, thick hydraulic fluid causing a false bypass. This confirms that either the filter is genuinely clogged with debris, or the bypass pressure switch/sensor circuit is faulty.

   Check transmission/hydraulic fluid level and inspect the fluid for a burnt smell or heavy contamination.

   Verify transmission oil temperature sensor data using a diagnostic tool to ensure it is not shorted high (which could falsely trigger the normal/high temperature condition).

   Inspect the transmission filter bypass switch wiring harness and connector for chafing, corrosion, or an open/short circuit that might send a false open valve signal.

   Inspect the transmission filter for severe restriction or clogging.

   Prepare the Machine

   Park the tractor on a level surface, engage the parking brake, turn off the engine, and relieve any residual hydraulic pressure.

   Drain/Catch Fluid

   Place a large drain pan under the transmission oil filter housing, as fluid will escape when the filter is removed.

   Remove the Filter

   Unscrew the spin-on transmission hydraulic oil filter (or remove the cartridge housing, depending on the specific tractor model).

   Inspect for Debris

   Cut open the old filter or inspect the pleats. Note: If you find heavy metal shavings or brass/clutch material, this indicates a severe internal transmission failure, not just a dirty filter.

   Replace the Filter

   Lubricate the sealing ring of the new transmission filter with clean hydraulic oil. Install the new filter and tighten to the manufacturer's specifications (usually hand-tight plus a half-turn).

   Test the Bypass Switch (If necessary)

   If replacing the filter does not clear the code, the bypass switch itself may be stuck open or failed. Unthread the bypass switch from the filter base and replace it with a new unit.

   Refill and Test

   Top off the transmission fluid (e.g., Case IH Hy-Tran Ultraction) to the correct level. Start the machine, allow it to reach operating temperature, and verify that the ZTC fault code clears and does not return.
