Case IH 2699 – ZTC: Secondary Transmission Oil Filter is restricted

Issue description

The secondary transmission oil filter is restricted with debris, preventing normal hydraulic flow and forcing fluid through the filter bypass valve. This is triggered when the pressure switch remains closed for a specified duration while the engine is running at working RPMs and the transmission oil is up to operating temperature.

Applies to these machines

  • Steiger T4B
  • Steiger
  • Puma
  • Magnum

Check the cause

  1. Ensure the tractor is at operating temperature, as cold, highly viscous hydraulic fluid can cause a false restriction reading

  2. Check the wiring harness and connector at the secondary transmission filter restriction switch for corrosion, chafing, or a short to ground

  3. Verify that the pressure switch itself has not failed in the 'closed' position

  4. Check the transmission fluid level and inspect the fluid for heavy contamination or a burnt odor

Repair steps

  1. Park and secure the tractor

Park the tractor on a level surface, engage the parking brake, and turn off the engine.

  2. Relieve hydraulic pressure

Relieve any residual hydraulic pressure by cycling the hydraulic remotes.

  3. Locate the filter

Locate the secondary transmission oil filter canister on the transmission housing.

  4. Prepare for fluid drain

Place a drain pan underneath the filter housing to catch residual fluid.

  5. Remove the restricted filter

Using a filter wrench, unscrew and remove the restricted transmission oil filter.

  6. Inspect the filter element

Cut open or closely inspect the restricted filter element. If excessive metal shavings or brass/clutch material are found, the transmission may have suffered internal mechanical failure requiring a teardown.

  7. Clean the housing

Clean the filter housing mating surface.

  8. Lubricate the new O-ring

Lubricate the sealing O-ring of the new OEM transmission filter with clean transmission fluid.

  9. Install the new filter

Thread the new filter on by hand until the gasket makes contact, then tighten according to the specifications printed on the filter (usually 3/4 to 1 full turn).

  10. Top off transmission fluid

Top off the transmission fluid reservoir using the OEM-specified fluid (e.g., Case IH Hy-Tran Ultraction).

  11. Check for leaks

Start the engine, allow the transmission to reach operating temperature, and check for leaks.

  12. Clear fault codes and test drive

Clear the ZTC fault codes using a diagnostic tool and test drive to ensure code 2699 does not return.
