Case IH 2702 – Transmission Control Unit (TCU) / Transmission Controller: PTCTL1 CAN message error / DTOA

Controller Area Network (CAN) communication failure regarding the PTCTL1 message. The system is reporting that the signal for DTOA (desired transmission output acceleration) is either missing, timing out, or containing invalid data.

   Inspect the physical CAN wires for breaks or damage

   Test the CAN wire/connector to ensure it is not defective and does not have contact with vehicle ground or battery voltage

   Verify there is no electrical interference on the CAN-Bus

   Check the transmitting unit (EC/MC or UC) to see if it is actively sending the PTCTL1 message

   Disconnect battery

   Disconnect battery power before servicing the CAN network.

   Locate harness

   Locate the CAN bus harness connecting the Engine/Vehicle ECU to the Transmission Control Unit.

   Test CAN lines

   Perform a continuity and resistance test on the CAN High and CAN Low lines. (Standard CAN networks should read approximately 60 ohms across the network).

   Repair wiring

   Repair or replace any damaged pins, connectors, or chafed wires that are shorting to ground or voltage.

   Replace control module

   If the wiring harness is fully intact and terminating resistors are good, the fault lies within a defective control module (either the transmitting ECU or the receiving TCU) which will require replacement and dealer reprogramming.
