Case IH 2703 – ZTC: PTCTL1 Message and DCTL Signal CAN Communication Error
Issue description
A CAN communication error regarding the PTCTL1 (Powertrain Control 1) message and the DCTL (Desired Clutch Torque Limit) signal. The transmission controller is not receiving the correct torque limit commands from the engine or user controller over the CAN bus because the signal is not available, has timed out, or contains invalid data.

Check the cause
Check the power supply to the ZTC module, specifically the switched key fuse (often a 5A fuse, e.g., F-103 or F2_14).
Check the CAN bus wiring between the Engine Control Unit (ECU), the User Controller (UC), and the ZTC for broken wires, defective connectors, or wires shorted to ground/battery voltage.
Measure the CAN bus resistance with the battery disconnected (should read approximately 60 ohms).
Use the CNH Electronic Service Tool (EST) to check if the PTCTL1 message counter is invalid or if there is a CRC check failure, indicating a software glitch or version mismatch.
Repair steps
Power Down and Isolate
Turn off the tractor, disconnect the battery, and locate the ZTC (CVT Controller) and the main Engine Controller.
Inspect and Clean Connectors
Disconnect the harness connectors at the ZTC. Inspect the pins for corrosion, moisture, or pushed-back terminals. Clean with contact cleaner and securely reconnect.
Test Harness Continuity
Using a multimeter, perform a continuity test on the CAN High and CAN Low wires between the ZTC and the ECU. Repair any breaks or chafing in the harness.
Replace Blown Fuses
If the 5A ZTC switched power fuse is blown, replace it. If it blows again immediately, trace the ZTC power wire for a short to ground.
Software Flash
If the wiring is perfectly intact and the CAN bus is healthy, connect the CNH EST diagnostic tool. Flash/update the software on both the ZTC and the Engine Controller to resolve potential CAN message counter mismatches.
Module Replacement
If the ZTC fails to communicate entirely or internally fails to process the PTCTL1 CAN messages despite good wiring and software, the ZTC module itself must be replaced and calibrated.
