2708

Case IH 2708 – ZTC: ZTC - CAN message PTCTL1 signal DDT error or not available (desired direction of travel)

Issue description

The controller is detecting a timeout, invalid data, or a missing signal for the PTCTL1 (Powertrain Control 1) CAN message. Specifically, the DDT (Desired Direction of Travel) signal within that message is missing or corrupted. This means the tractor's control system does not know which direction the operator is requesting (Forward, Neutral, or Reverse), which will typically result in a transmission shutdown or failure to engage gears.

Applies to these machines

  • Steiger T4B
  • Case IH Steiger (AFS Connect models)
  • Case IH Magnum
  • Case IH Puma / Optum
  • Case IH Farmall (Power Shuttle models)

Check the cause

  1. Check for accompanying CAN bus codes using the Electronic Service Tool (EST) to rule out main CAN bus wiring issues

  2. Test the Forward/Neutral/Reverse (FNR) shuttle lever physically to ensure it clicks into detents and returns to neutral properly

  3. Inspect the wiring harness and connectors between the FNR lever, Transmission Controller, and ZTC for pinched wires, corrosion, bent pins, or moisture

  4. Ensure the transmission controller is receiving proper voltage and is fully powered up

Repair steps

  1. Isolate the Fault

Using the EST or a multimeter, verify if the FNR shuttle switch is sending the correct voltage/resistance values when moved through Forward, Neutral, and Reverse.

  2. Repair CAN Wiring (If Applicable)

If the switch tests good but the PTCTL1 message is still missing, trace the CAN High and CAN Low wires from the steering column/armrest to the ZTC. Repair any open circuits, shorts to ground, or shorts to battery voltage.

  3. Replace the FNR Switch/Lever

If the switch fails the electrical test (a common failure point due to repetitive use or moisture intrusion), disconnect the battery, remove the steering column trim or armrest bezel, unplug the switch harness, and install a new FNR shuttle lever.

  4. Clear and Test

Reconnect the battery, clear the fault codes using the EST, and test drive the tractor to ensure the transmission engages smoothly in the desired direction of travel without throwing the 2708 code.
