Case IH 2709 (517974.15) - DEC – Transmission Control Module (TCU / UCM / CCM): F2 solenoid - short to VBat

Issue description

The control module has detected that the electrical circuit for the F2 (Forward 2 / High Range) transmission proportional solenoid is shorted to battery voltage (VBat). This can be caused by a wiring harness chafing against a power source, a failed transmission controller keeping the circuit energized, or an internal short within the solenoid coil itself.

Check the cause

  1. Harness Inspection: Inspect the transmission wiring harness between the Transmission Control Module and the F2 solenoid. Look for melted insulation, chafing, or pinched wires that could be bridging the F2 signal wire to a 12V power source.

  2. Voltage Check: Disconnect the F2 solenoid connector. Turn the key to the ON position (engine off). Use a multimeter to probe the signal wire on the harness side. If it shows battery voltage (~12V) when the transmission is in neutral and the solenoid is not being commanded, the short is in the wiring harness or the TCU.

  3. Component Swap Test: To determine if the solenoid itself is internally shorted, swap the F2 solenoid (and valve) with the F1 solenoid. Clear the codes and operate the tractor. If the fault code changes to the F1 circuit (or if the shifting problem moves to a different gear range, such as gears 10-18), the solenoid is the culprit. If the 2709 code remains, the issue is in the wiring or the controller.

  4. Coil Resistance: Measure the resistance across the two pins of the F2 solenoid. An abnormally low reading indicates an internal short.

Repair steps

  1. Preparation

    Park the tractor on a level surface, engage the parking brake, and disconnect the battery to prevent accidental electrical shorts.

  2. Locate the Valve Block

    Locate the transmission control manifold/valve block on the side of the transmission housing.

  3. Disconnect Wiring

    Disconnect the 2-pin electrical connector from the F2 solenoid.

  4. Remove the Solenoid

    Using a suitable punch, remove the retaining pin (or mounting bolts, depending on the specific manifold design) holding the solenoid in place.

  5. Extract Components

    Carefully remove the plug, spring, and the F2 proportional solenoid valve from the manifold.

  6. Install New Solenoid

    Lubricate the O-rings on the new F2 solenoid with clean transmission fluid (e.g., Case IH Akcela Nexplore fluid) prior to reassembly. Insert the new solenoid, spring, and plug, then secure it with the retaining pin.

  7. Reassembly

    Reconnect the 2-pin electrical connector and reconnect the battery.

  8. Calibration

    Clear the fault codes using the tractor's display or a diagnostic tool. You must perform a transmission calibration procedure so the TCU can learn the current draw and engagement point of the new F2 solenoid/synchronizer.
