Case IH 2710 (517974.17) - DEC – Transmission Control Unit (TCU) / Drive Electronic Controller (DEC): F2 Solenoid Short to Ground

Issue description

A short to ground in the circuit for the F2 solenoid (Forward 2, High Range, or F2/R1 synchronizer). The electrical current traveling from the control module to the solenoid is finding an unintended path to the chassis/ground, preventing the solenoid from energizing properly and resulting in the transmission failing to engage the corresponding gear or range.

Check the cause

  1. Check the Power Supply: Verify that the external power supply and charging system are functioning correctly, as voltage irregularities can trigger false solenoid codes.

  2. Inspect the Wire Harness: Visually inspect the transmission chassis wire harness for chafing, pinched wires, or melted insulation that could cause the F2 signal wire to touch the vehicle frame.

  3. Test the Harness for Shorts: Disconnect the harness from the UCM/TCU and the solenoid. Use a multimeter to test the specific pins (e.g., Pins A4 or C7 on the EPL module) for continuity to ground.

  4. Test the Solenoid Coil Resistance: Disconnect the F2 solenoid and measure the resistance between terminal 1 and terminal 2 on the solenoid itself (should read between 8 to 11 Ohms). Check for continuity between a terminal and the solenoid casing.

  5. Swap Test: Temporarily swap the F1 and F2 solenoids on the valve block. If the fault code or shifting problem moves to the other gear range, the solenoid is the culprit; if it stays on the F2 circuit, the issue is in the wiring harness or control module.

Repair steps

  1. Preparation

    Turn the ignition to the 'OFF' position and disconnect the battery to prevent electrical spikes.

  2. Locate the Valve Block

    Locate the transmission control valve assembly on the side of the transmission housing. Clean the area thoroughly to prevent dirt from entering the hydraulic system.

  3. Remove the Faulty Solenoid

    Disconnect the 2-pin electrical connector from the F2 solenoid. Using a suitable punch or tool, remove the retaining pin or mounting bolts securing the solenoid to the manifold.

  4. Extract the Valve

    Carefully pull the solenoid (and the proportional valve/spring assembly if it comes out as a unit) from the transmission housing.

  5. Install the New Solenoid

    Lubricate the O-rings on the new solenoid with clean transmission fluid (e.g., Case IH Akcela Nexplore). Insert the new solenoid into the bore and secure it with the retaining pin or bolts, torquing to standard specifications.

  6. Reassembly

    Reconnect the 2-pin electrical connector. Reconnect the battery.

  7. Clear Codes and Calibrate

    Turn the key ON. Enter the diagnostic 'H' menu on the dot matrix display (using the special diagnostic tool or button sequence) and clear the stored fault codes from the EEPROM. Perform a transmission clutch/synchronizer calibration procedure to ensure the UCM learns the engagement profile of the new solenoid.
