Case IH 2710 – Transmission Control Unit (TCU) / Vehicle Domain Controller (VDC) / ZTC: PTCTL1 / DCCOS CAN Communication Issue
Issue description
The transmission controller is failing to receive the PTCTL1 message that dictates the desired clutch cut-off state. Without this signal, the transmission does not know when the clutch is requested to disengage, resulting in harsh shifting, failure to shift, or defaulting to a limp home or neutral state.

Check the cause
Check for companion codes (e.g., EEC1, EEC2) using a diagnostic tool to determine if there is a global CAN bus failure rather than an isolated clutch signal issue
Inspect the clutch pedal position sensor/potentiometer for smooth operation without dead spots
Perform a CAN bus resistance test with the battery disconnected by measuring resistance between CAN High and CAN Low at the diagnostic port (should read approximately 60 ohms)
Visually inspect the wiring harness between the cab and the Transmission Control Unit (TCU/ZTC) for chafing, rodent damage, or tight bends

Isolate the CAN Network
If the CAN resistance test fails, begin isolating sections of the CAN bus by unplugging modules one by one until the resistance returns to normal, which will pinpoint the shorted module or harness section.
Clean and Reseat Connectors
Locate the main connectors for the Transmission Control Unit (TCU/ZTC). Disconnect them and inspect for water ingress, corrosion, or pushed-back pins. Clean the contacts with a high-quality electrical contact cleaner and apply dielectric grease before reconnecting.
Test/Replace the Clutch Sensor
If the CAN bus is healthy but the DCCOS signal is still invalid, use a multimeter to test the reference voltage (usually 5V) and the signal return from the clutch pedal position sensor. If the voltage drops out during pedal travel, replace the sensor.
Check Terminating Resistors
If the CAN bus reads 120 ohms, locate the two terminating resistors on the powertrain CAN network. Unplug and test them individually (they should each read 120 ohms). Replace the faulty resistor.
Software Update
If the wiring and sensors pass all tests, connect the CNH EST and check for software updates for the TCU/VDC. A known software glitch can sometimes cause false PTCTL1 message timeouts. Reflash the module if an update is available.
Clear and Calibrate
After repairs, clear the fault codes. Perform a transmission and clutch calibration procedure via the tractor's display or the EST tool so the TCU can relearn the clutch engagement points.
