2711 (517974.04) - DEC

Case IH 2711 (517974.04) - DEC – UCM (Universal Control Module): F2 solenoid - short to ground

Issue description

The controller has detected an open circuit or a short to ground in the circuit for the F2 Solenoid (High Range Clutch Solenoid), which prevents the transmission from shifting into or out of high-range gears (often locking out gears 10-18).

Applies to these machines

  • VESTRUM CVX
  • Case IH Puma Series: 125, 165, 180, 195, 210, 225 CVX
  • Case IH Magnum Series: 210, 220 (Tier 4B CVT)
  • Case IH Maxxum Series

Check the cause

  1. Verify that no unauthorized external power supplies are connected and check that the tractor's charging system is functioning correctly.

  2. Disconnect the F2 solenoid and use a multimeter to measure the resistance between terminal 1 and terminal 2 (should be 8 to 11 Ohms).

  3. Disconnect the transmission harness from the UCM and the solenoid, then check for continuity to ground on the wire running to the F2 solenoid to identify a short.

  4. Perform a mechanical/hydraulic swap test by swapping the F1 and F2 solenoids (and their respective valves) to see if the shifting problem moves to the low-range gears, ruling out a stuck valve body.

Repair steps

  1. Solenoid Replacement

If the resistance of the F2 solenoid is outside the 8 - 11 Ohms specification, remove and replace the high range clutch (F2) solenoid.

  2. Harness Repair

If the multimeter test reveals a short to ground in the wiring, trace the engine/transmission harness to locate the chafed or grounded conductor. Repair the broken wire or replace the affected harness segment.

  3. Software Flash

If both the wire harness and the solenoid test perfectly fine, the service manual dictates downloading the correct/latest level of software to the UCM.

  4. UCM Replacement

If the harness is intact, the solenoid is within spec, the software is updated, and the fault still recurs, the Universal Control Module (UCM) has an internal fault and must be removed and replaced.

  5. Clear Codes

Once the physical repair is complete, clear the error code from the UCM and test drive the tractor through all transmission ranges to verify the fix.

Parts you might need

(3)
  • F2 Solenoid / High Range Clutch Solenoid

Generic OEM part name; specific part number varies heavily by exact transmission sub-model, usually sold as a transmission valve block solenoid.

  • F2 Solenoid Electrical Connector (2-Pin Female)

    371614A1

Replaces # 12452587. This is the standard 2-pin female connector used for the F1, F2, R1, R2, and Clutch A/B solenoids on Case IH Magnum and Puma tractors.

  • F2 Solenoid Electrical Connector (2-Pin Female)

    87694154

Alternative part number for the standard 2-pin female connector.
