Case IH 2712 (517971.15) - DEC – DEC: R1 (Reverse 1 or Range 1) solenoid circuit has a short to VBat (Battery Voltage)

Issue description

The transmission controller is detecting unexpected battery voltage on the R1 solenoid control circuit. This condition prevents the controller from properly regulating the solenoid, which can lead to harsh shifting, failure to engage the specific gear/range, or the transmission defaulting to a neutral/limp mode to prevent mechanical damage.

Check the cause

  1. Visually inspect the transmission wiring harness from the DEC/UCM to the transmission valve block for chafed insulation, pinched wires, or areas rubbing against the chassis or cab mounts.

  2. Perform a voltage check: Disconnect the R1 solenoid connector, turn the key to the ON position (engine off), and probe the signal wire on the harness side. If it reads ~12V, the wiring harness is shorted to a power wire.

  3. Test solenoid resistance: Measure the resistance across the two pins of the R1 solenoid. If resistance is near zero ohms, the solenoid coil is internally shorted.

  4. Check controller pins: Disconnect the harness at the DEC/UCM and inspect for water intrusion, corrosion, or bent pins that could bridge a 12V supply pin to the R1 signal pin.

Repair steps

  1. Preparation

    Park the tractor on a level surface, engage the parking brake, turn off the engine, and disconnect the negative battery cable.

  2. Locate the Solenoid

    Locate the transmission control valve block (usually on the side of the transmission housing). Identify the R1 solenoid (refer to the specific model's service manual diagram to ensure you are pulling R1 and not F1/F2/F3).

  3. Disconnect Wiring

    Unplug the 2-pin electrical connector from the R1 solenoid.

  4. Remove the Solenoid

    Clean the area around the solenoid to prevent dirt from entering the transmission valve body. Remove the retaining bolt or snap-ring holding the solenoid in place. Pull the solenoid straight out.

  5. Install the New Solenoid

    Lubricate the O-rings on the new solenoid with clean transmission fluid. Carefully insert the new solenoid into the valve block and secure it with the retaining hardware.

  6. Reassembly

    Reconnect the 2-pin electrical connector. Reconnect the battery.

  7. Calibration & Testing

    Clear the fault codes using the tractor's display monitor or the Case IH Electronic Service Tool (EST). Start the tractor and perform a transmission calibration procedure (often required when replacing transmission solenoids) to ensure smooth engagement. Test drive to verify Reverse 1 / Range 1 engages properly.
