Case IH 2713 – Transmission Control Unit (TCU) / ZTC: CAN message PTCTL1 signal DTOAPR error or not available
Issue description
The control unit is unable to determine the desired acceleration value when the operator changes the direction of travel (shuttle shifting from forward to reverse, or vice versa). Because it cannot read this input, it cannot provide the CAN bus with the relevant data to execute a smooth power reversal. The transmission will typically default to a safe state, which may result in harsh shifting, a warning buzzer, or a temporary loss of shuttle drive.
Applies to these machines
4 machines- Steiger T4B
- Case IH Puma series
- Case IH Maxxum series
- Case IH Magnum series
Check the cause
Check for other associated CAN bus timeout errors (e.g., EEC1, EEC2, PTCTL2) to rule out a global CAN bus issue.
Inspect the forward/reverse shuttle lever (FNR switch) for smooth physical operation and verify live data values in the diagnostic tool.
Inspect the CAN bus wiring harness between the cab controller and the TCU for chafed wires, corrosion, or pushed-out pins.
Verify the terminating resistors on the CAN bus network read approximately 60 ohms across the high and low pins with the battery disconnected.
Repair steps
Verify the Fault
Connect the Case IH Electronic Service Tool (EST). Check if code 2713 is active or stored. Clear the code and cycle the shuttle lever to see if it immediately returns.
Test the Circuit
Back-probe the connector at the shuttle lever. Verify it is receiving the correct 5V reference and ground. If the voltage is out of spec, trace the wiring back to the cab controller to repair the open/short.
Replace the Shuttle Lever
If the wiring is intact but the shuttle lever's potentiometer/switches are sending erratic or dead signals during directional changes, replace the shuttle lever assembly.
Software Update
If the physical components and wiring test fine, check the Case IH EST for a software update for the ZTC/TCU. A reflash can sometimes resolve logic errors where the module fails to process the PTCTL1 message.
Replace the TCU
If all wiring is verified, the shuttle lever is new, and the software is up to date, the Transmission Control Unit itself has suffered an internal CAN transceiver failure and must be replaced and programmed.
