Case IH 2715 – ZTC (Transmission Controller): PTCTL1 CAN Message Error / Range Shift Limiter

The PTCTL1 (Powertrain Control 1) CAN message is either timing out, missing, or broadcasting invalid data regarding the RSL (Range Shift Limiter). This indicates a message counter mismatch or a timeout between the powertrain modules, forcing the system to restrict transmission functions.

   Check the physical CAN wires between the Engine Control Unit (ECU) and the ZTC (Transmission Controller) for breaks, chafing, or interference

   Inspect connectors for defective or pushed-out pins, corrosion, or shorts to the vehicle chassis

   Use a diagnostic tool (like Case IH EST) to monitor the CAN bus and verify if the PTCTL1 message is being broadcast by the ECU

   Disconnect battery

   Disconnect battery power before servicing the transmission controller harness.

   Disconnect harness

   Locate the ZTC module and disconnect its main harness.

   Test continuity

   Perform a continuity test on the CAN High and CAN Low wires between the ZTC and the main powertrain data link.

   Test resistors

   Test the CAN bus terminating resistors (should read approximately 60 ohms across CAN High and CAN Low).

   Repair wiring

   Repair any broken wires or replace damaged connector pins found during the continuity test.

   Test drive

   Reconnect the modules, clear the fault codes using the diagnostic tool, and perform a test drive to ensure the Range Shift Limiter data is successfully transmitting and the transmission shifts through all ranges.
