2716 (1044.17) - DEC

Case IH 2716 (1044.17) - DEC – DEC: HST Solenoid - LSD short to GND

Issue description

An electrical failure in the transmission control system where the 'Low Side Driver' circuit controlling the Hydrostatic Transmission Solenoid has detected a short circuit to ground (GND).

Applies to these machines

  • VESTRUM CVX
  • Case IH Steiger series
  • Case IH Magnum series

Check the cause

  1. Visually inspect the wiring harness running from the DEC module to the HST Solenoid for pinched wires, melted insulation, or areas rubbing against the metal chassis.

  2. Disconnect the HST solenoid and use a multimeter to check for continuity between the low-side driver wire and the chassis ground (continuity indicates a shorted harness).

  3. Test the HST solenoid itself for an internal short to ground.

  4. Check the pins on the DEC module connector for corrosion, moisture, or bent pins that could be bridging the circuit to a ground pin.

Repair steps

  1. Power Down

Turn off the ignition and disconnect the battery to prevent further electrical damage.

  2. Isolate the Short

Based on the diagnostic checks, locate the exact point of the short circuit.

  3. Repair Wiring / Replace Component

If the wiring harness is damaged, repair the chafed wire using proper weather-sealed splices, or replace the harness section. If the HST solenoid is internally shorted, remove and replace the solenoid.

  4. Clear Codes

Reconnect the battery and use a compatible diagnostic scan tool (such as the CNH EST or Jaltest Agricultural Diagnostic Kit) to clear the inactive fault codes from the DEC memory.

  5. Recalibrate

If transmission components or the DEC module were replaced, perform a DEC transmission calibration procedure using the diagnostic tool before returning the machine to service.

Parts you might need

(2)
  • HST Solenoid (Hydrostatic Transmission Solenoid)

Parts must be matched to the specific machine's serial number and DEC transmission variant (e.g., Full Power Shift vs. CVT).

  • DEC Transmission Wiring Harness

Parts must be matched to the specific machine's serial number and DEC transmission variant (e.g., Full Power Shift vs. CVT).
