Case IH 2716 – ZTC (Zone Tractor Controller): PTCTL1 Message Communication Failure / PSS Signal Error
Issue description
Indicates a communication failure on the Controller Area Network (CAN) bus specifically related to the PTCTL1 (Power Train Control 1) message. The signal for 'PSS' (Prepare Shuttle Shift) is either in error, invalid, or completely unavailable due to a message timeout, an invalid message counter, or a failed CRC check, preventing the transmission control system from safely executing a shuttle shift.
Applies to these machines
5 machines- Steiger T4B
- Case IH Steiger series (AFS Connect models)
- Case IH Magnum series (AFS Connect models)
- Case IH Optum series
- Case IH Puma series
Check the cause
Use the Electronic Service Tool (EST) to retrieve all active and logged fault codes. Look for accompanying CAN timeout codes (e.g., EEC1, EEC2, REAXCTRL) which indicate a broader CAN bus failure rather than an isolated PTCTL1 issue.
Inspect the CAN bus wiring harness between the ZTC and the Transmission Control Unit. Check for broken wires, defective connectors, or wires shorted to ground/vehicle voltage.
Verify there is no electromagnetic interference on the CAN bus disrupting the PTCTL1 message counter or CRC checks.
Repair steps
Disconnect Power
Turn off the machine and disconnect the battery before servicing the electrical system to prevent damage to the ECUs.
Repair Wiring
If the diagnostic checks reveal a broken CAN wire or a defective connector between the ZTC and the transmission controller, repair or replace the affected harness section.
Check Controller Connections
Disconnect the harness at the ZTC and TCU. Clean the pins with electrical contact cleaner and ensure no pins are bent or pushed back into the connector housing. Reconnect securely.
Software Update
If the wiring is fully intact, connect the EST and check for software updates for the ZTC and TCU. Reflash the controllers if an update addressing CAN communication stability is available.
Module Replacement
If the fault persists and the transmission control unit detects an internal CAN controller hardware failure, the ZTC or TCU must be replaced.
Clear and Test
Clear the fault codes using the diagnostic tool and perform a test drive, specifically engaging the shuttle shift to ensure the code does not return.
Parts you might need
(3)Zone Tractor Controller (ZTC) / Central Controller
Exact OEM part number varies heavily by specific tractor model, serial number, and EST model code
Transmission Control Unit (TCU)
Exact OEM part number depends on the transmission variant
CAN Bus Wiring Harness / Pigtail Connectors
Required if the harness is broken or shorted
