Case IH 2742 (517966.11) - DEC – Transmission Control Unit (TCU): Clutch A solenoid - generic/unknown error

Issue description

The control module has detected an electrical anomaly in the Clutch A solenoid circuit. Common underlying conditions include an open circuit in the solenoid coil or wiring harness, a short circuit to ground or a short to power (+12V), or a mismatch between the commanded solenoid current and the actual hydraulic pressure achieved in Clutch A (plausibility error).

Applies to these machines

  • VESTRUM CVX
  • Puma Series
  • Maxxum / MXM Series
  • Magnum Series
  • Farmall Pro EP Series

Check the cause

  1. Inspect the transmission wiring harness and the specific connector for the Clutch A solenoid (often labeled X-100 or C161 depending on the model). Look for corroded pins, broken wires, or loose connections.

  2. Disconnect the processor connectors and use a multimeter to check the solenoid circuit for an open circuit or a short to ground/earth.

  3. Enter the tractor's diagnostic mode (e.g., HJ mode on some models). Depress the clutch pedal, move the shuttle lever to forward, and release the clutch to energize the Clutch A solenoid. Observe the pressure reading on a hydraulic gauge. Depending on the model, it should read approximately 16-18 bar or 20-22 bar. If the pressure is correct but the code persists, the issue is likely electrical; if pressure is low, the solenoid may be mechanically stuck or the clutch pack is leaking.

Repair steps

  1. Preparation

Park the tractor on a level surface, engage the parking brake, and disconnect the battery to prevent electrical shorts.

  2. Access the Valve Block

Locate the transmission control valve block. Depending on the tractor model, this may require removing the cab floor mat and access panel, or accessing it from the side of the transmission housing.

  3. Remove the Solenoid

Disconnect the electrical connector from the Clutch A solenoid. Remove the retaining bolt(s) securing the solenoid to the valve block.

  4. Extraction

Carefully pull the old solenoid valve out of the manifold. Have a rag ready, as a small amount of transmission fluid will leak.

  5. Installation

Lubricate the O-rings on the new solenoid with clean transmission fluid. Insert the new solenoid into the valve block and secure it with the retaining bolt(s).

  6. Reassembly

Reconnect the electrical connector and reinstall any removed cab floor panels. Reconnect the battery.

  7. Calibration

Start the tractor and bring the transmission fluid up to operating temperature. Use the tractor's display monitor or an electronic service tool to perform a Transmission Clutch Calibration (specifically the Clutch A quick fill adjustment). This step is mandatory to ensure the TCU learns the engagement characteristics of the new solenoid.
