Check the cause
Check fuel filters for restriction or plugging, which can cause intermittent codes (Fault Code 275 and 328).
Verify that the fuel lift pump is supplying adequate pressure to the CAPS pump.
Inspect the engine wiring harness for failures that could trigger the fault.
Check for active electrical circuit Fault Codes 271 or 272 (Front Pumping Valve Circuit) and troubleshoot those first if present.
Use an Electronic Service Tool (EST) to run the 'Pumping Plunger Cutout Test' to verify element performance.
Repair steps
Perform Pumping Plunger Cutout Test
Connect the Electronic Service Tool (EST) and perform the Pumping Plunger Cutout Test.
Evaluate test results
If the front pumping element fails to perform equally to the rear element or fails to maintain accumulator pressure, the mechanical pumping element has failed.
Replace components
Replace the fuel accumulator module. Note: Because individual CAPS pump components are highly complex and prone to wear, most dealers and diesel shops replace the entire CAPS Fuel Injection Pump assembly as a remanufactured unit or install a P-Pump conversion kit.
Reconnect components
Once the new pump or accumulator module is installed, reconnect all components and turn the key switch to the 'ON' position.
Idle engine
Start the engine and let it idle for one minute.
Verify fault code
Using the EST, verify that Fault Code 275 is now inactive.
Erase fault codes
Erase the inactive fault codes using the EST to complete the repair.
