276

Case IH 276 – Engine Controller (ENG): Injection Control Valve current is out of range

Issue description

Open or short circuit in the electrical circuit controlling the fuel injection control valve.

Applies to these machines

  • MX Magnum
  • STX Steiger
  • MX Series
  • MX240
  • MX255
  • MX270
  • MX285
  • TG Series
  • Steiger Series
  • STX275
  • STX325
  • Magnum
  • Puma

Check the cause

  1. Use a DVOM (Digital Volt-Ohm Meter) to test the electrical circuit

  2. Check the wiring harness specifically at engine controller pin A7 for an open or short circuit

  3. Inspect the wiring and connectors running from the engine controller to the Injection Control Valve for damage, corrosion, or loose connections

Repair steps

  1. Disconnect battery and locate components

Disconnect the battery and locate the Engine Controller and the Injection Control Valve.

  2. Inspect and test wiring harness

Inspect and test the wiring harness between engine controller pin A7 and the valve.

  3. Repair wiring or replace connectors

Repair any open or shorted wires, or replace damaged connectors found during the diagnostic phase.

  4. Replace Injection Control Valve

If the wiring tests good, the Injection Control Valve itself has likely failed (often triggering a related code 277: "Injection Control Valve is failed") and must be replaced.

  5. Replace valve or rebuild CAPS pump

For tractors equipped with the 8.3L engine and a CAPS (Cummins Accumulator Pump System) fuel pump, replacing the valve or rebuilding the CAPS pump may be necessary if low fuel pressure issues persist.

  6. Clear error codes

After replacing the faulty wiring or valve, clear the error codes from the system.

Parts you might need

(3)
  • Injection Control Valve

    87347275

Cummins 3963808 / Bosch 1417413047. Used as a pressure relief/control valve for Common Rail systems.

  • Injection Control Valve

    79110488

    Bosch overflow valve.

  • CAPS Fuel Pump / Valve

For CAPS pump applications, purchasing the replacement pump or valve directly through Cummins (using the Cummins equivalent part number) is often more cost-effective.
