Case IH 278 – Engine Controller (ENG): Fuel Lift Pump is failed

Issue description

Indicates an electrical or operational failure in the electric fuel lift pump circuit, meaning the pump is either unplugged, experiencing an open/short circuit, or has failed internally.

Applies to these machines

  • MX Magnum
  • STX Steiger
  • MX240
  • MX255
  • MX270
  • MX285
  • STX440
  • Magnum series
  • TG210
  • TG230
  • TG255
  • TG285

Check the cause

  1. Check the Connection: Verify that the electric fuel lift pump is actually plugged in. Running or cranking the tractor with the pump unplugged will immediately trigger Code 278.

  2. Inspect the Wiring Harness: Trace the wiring from the fuel lift pump back to the Engine Controller. Look for chafed wires, corrosion, or an open/short circuit.

  3. Test Pin 11: Test the continuity and voltage at Engine Controller Pin 11 to ensure the relay driver is sending the correct signal to the pump.

Repair steps

  1. Turn off machine and disconnect battery

Turn off the machine and disconnect the battery to prevent electrical shorts.

  2. Locate fuel lift pump

Locate the electric fuel lift pump on the engine block.

  3. Disconnect electrical harness

Disconnect the electrical harness connector from the lift pump.

  4. Disconnect fuel lines

Disconnect the fuel lines routed to the pump. Have a catch pan ready to collect residual diesel fuel.

  5. Remove mounting bolts

Remove the three mounting bolts coming in from the top that hold the pump assembly together/to the housing.

  6. Remove old pump

Remove the old pump and the rubber gasket.

  7. Install new pump

Install the new fuel lift pump and its new gasket, tightening the three mounting bolts to OEM torque specs.

  8. Reconnect lines and connector

Reconnect the fuel lines and plug the electrical connector back in.

  9. Prime fuel system and start

Prime the fuel system if necessary, reconnect the battery, and start the tractor.

  10. Clear fault codes

Clear the fault codes. On some Magnum/MX displays, this can be done by holding the 'INCR' and 'DECR' keys simultaneously for 10 seconds, though a dealer laptop may be required if the code is hard-stored.
