279

Case IH 279 – Engine Controller (ENG): Injection Control Valve current is out of range

Issue description

The engine controller has detected an open circuit or a short circuit on the Injection Control Valve (ICV) circuit at engine controller pin A7, which can cause severe power loss, stalling, or a no-start condition.

Applies to these machines

  • MX Magnum
  • STX Steiger
  • MX240
  • MX255
  • MX270
  • MX285
  • Magnum 215
  • Magnum 225
  • Magnum 245
  • Magnum 250
  • Magnum 275
  • Magnum 280
  • Magnum 305
  • Magnum 310
  • Magnum 335
  • STX275
  • STX325
  • TG210
  • TG230
  • TG255
  • TG285

Check the cause

  1. Inspect the engine wiring harness between the Engine Controller (pin A7) and the Injection Control Valve for chafed wires, melted insulation, or loose connectors

  2. Perform an ICV Stator Resistance Test using a multimeter to check for an internal short or open in the stator coil

  3. Check the transient suppressor diode bolted to the side of the engine block, which absorbs high-voltage electrical surges when the ICV solenoid closes

Repair steps

  1. Disconnect Power

Disconnect the machine's batteries before servicing the engine controller or fuel system wiring.

  2. Repair Wiring

If the diagnostic checks reveal a broken or shorted wire between ECM pin A7 and the ICV, repair the wiring harness using appropriate weatherproof splices.

  3. Replace the ICV / Stator

If the wiring is intact but the ICV stator fails the resistance test, replace the entire ICV assembly on the top of the CAPS pump or replace just the ICV Stator.

  4. Replace the Transient Suppressor

Replace the Transient Suppressor diode anytime the ICV or ECM is replaced, as a failing suppressor will quickly destroy the new components.

  5. Reassemble and Clear Codes

Reconnect the batteries, clear the fault codes using a diagnostic tool, and prime the fuel system. Run the engine to verify that the code does not return and that the engine operates smoothly under load.
