2808

Case IH 2808 – Transmission Controller (TCU) or Vehicle Control Module (VCM): Operator attempted a shuttle while out of the seat

Issue description

This is a safety interlock code. It triggers when the operator moves the forward/reverse shuttle lever to put the tractor into gear, but the seat switch circuit is open, indicating that no one is sitting in the operator's seat.

Applies to these machines

  • Steiger T4B
  • Steiger / Quadtrac Series: 350, 380, 430, 450, 480, 540, 600
  • Magnum / MX Series: 215, 235, 245, 275, 305, 335, 340
  • Puma Series: 130 through 240
  • Maxxum Series: 115, 125, 135, 145, 150
  • Farmall Series: 55A, 75A, 75C, 85C, 95C, 105C, 115C

Check the cause

  1. Visually inspect for debris under and behind the seat suspension (tools, dirt, or trash can jam the mechanism and prevent the switch from closing).

  2. Perform a seat switch function test using the AFS Pro display or instrument cluster diagnostic menu to verify the switch status changes when sitting and standing.

  3. Inspect the wiring harness behind the seat for pinched wires, shorts to ground, or open circuits.

  4. Test the seat switch with a multimeter set to continuity (should read open circuit when empty, closed circuit when weight is applied).

Repair steps

  1. Park the machine

Park the machine on a level surface, turn off the key, and engage the parking brake.

  2. Clear debris

Clear any debris from the seat suspension area.

  3. Locate the seat switch

Locate the seat switch. Depending on the seat manufacturer (e.g., Grammer, Sears), it will be located either directly under the bottom seat cushion or integrated into the air/mechanical suspension base.

  4. Disconnect electrical connector

Disconnect the electrical connector from the seat switch.

  5. Remove mounting hardware

Remove the mounting hardware (usually small Torx or Phillips screws, or a twist-lock mechanism) securing the switch to the seat frame.

  6. Install replacement switch

Install the replacement seat switch and secure it.

  7. Reconnect harness

    Reconnect the electrical harness.

  8. Test shuttle lever

Turn the key on, sit firmly in the seat, and test the shuttle lever to ensure the transmission engages forward and reverse without throwing code 2808.

  9. Clear fault code

Clear the inactive fault code from the transmission controller using the instrument panel or an electronic service tool.
