Case IH 281 – Engine Control Module (ECM): Front Pumping element is failed

Issue description

The Engine Control Module (ECM) has detected a mechanical or hydraulic failure in the front pumping element of the CAPS (Cummins Accumulator Pump System) fuel injection pump. When this component fails, the pump cannot maintain the desired fuel pressure in the accumulator, resulting in engine power derate, poor performance, or the engine dying.

Applies to these machines

Check the cause

  1. Check fuel filters for severe plugging or restriction that could starve the pumping elements

  2. Inspect low-pressure fuel supply lines and electric fuel lift pump for air ingress (loose bolts, leaking fittings, cracked hoses)

  3. Clear inactive codes with an electronic service tool and run the engine to see if the code returns as an active fault

Repair steps

  1. Disconnect battery

Disconnect the battery power to the machine.

  2. Clean engine gear housing

Thoroughly clean the engine gear housing and the area around the CAPS fuel pump to prevent debris from entering the fuel system.

  3. Disconnect electrical harness

Disconnect the electrical harness connectors from the CAPS pump sensors and control valves.

  4. Remove low-pressure lines

Remove the low-pressure fuel supply and return lines.

  5. Remove high-pressure lines

Remove the high-pressure fuel injection lines. Cap all open ports immediately.

  6. Remove mounting bolts

Remove the mounting bolts securing the CAPS pump to the engine timing gear housing.

  7. Remove pump

Carefully remove the pump, ensuring you note the timing gear alignment.

  8. Install replacement pump

Install the remanufactured CAPS pump (or a heavy-duty P-Pump conversion kit, which is a popular aftermarket alternative for these tractors). Ensure the pump gear is correctly timed to the engine.

  9. Reinstall mounting bolts

Reinstall the mounting bolts and torque to OEM specifications.

  10. Reconnect lines and connectors

Reconnect all high-pressure and low-pressure fuel lines, and plug in the electrical connectors.

  11. Prime fuel system

Turn the key to the "ON" position to allow the electric lift pump to prime and bleed air from the fuel system.

  12. Start engine and verify

Start the engine, check for fuel leaks, and use a diagnostic tool to verify that Fault Code 281 has been cleared.
