Case IH 2816 – TRANS: Transmission regulated pressure accumulator is flat
Issue description
The transmission regulated pressure accumulator has lost its nitrogen pre-charge (gone 'flat') and cannot compensate for sudden fluid demand during a shift. The TCU detects that the transmission system pressure drops below 1200 kPa (174 psi) for more than 0.05 seconds during a power up-shift or down-shift.

Check the cause
Verify transmission hydraulic fluid level and ensure it is at operating temperature.
Check system pressure using a test gauge (0-300 psi / 0-2068 kPa) at the transmission control valve test ports to monitor pressure drops during shifting.
Test accumulator pre-charge using an accumulator test tool (Case IH Tool CAS1975) via the metric charge fitting (M28 x 1.5) to see if the nitrogen charge has dissipated.
Rule out pump or leak issues by verifying that the pressure drop is not caused by a failing system hydraulic pump or a severe internal hydraulic leak (which typically triggers codes 2820 or 2821).
Repair steps
Relieve Pressure
Park the machine on a level surface, turn off the engine, and actuate the hydraulic valves to relieve any residual hydraulic pressure in the transmission circuit.
Locate the Accumulator
The regulated pressure accumulator is typically mounted on or near the transmission control valve block. On many Magnum models, it is located behind the left-hand fuel tank and under the cab air filter.
Remove the Accumulator
Disconnect the hydraulic lines (cap or plug all lines to prevent contamination) and unthread the accumulator from its mounting bracket or valve block.
Recharge or Replace
If the internal bladder is intact, the accumulator can be recharged with nitrogen to OEM specifications (typically around 10 bar / 145 PSI preload). If the bladder has ruptured (hydraulic fluid is found in the gas chamber) or it will not hold a charge, the accumulator assembly must be replaced.
Reinstallation
Install the new or recharged accumulator. Replace any O-rings on the hydraulic fittings (e.g., 0.07" Thk x 0.489" ID O-rings) to prevent leaks.
Test and Calibrate
Start the tractor, check for leaks, and perform a transmission calibration if required by the service manual. Test drive to ensure shifting is smooth and Code 2816 does not return.
