Case IH 2819 – Transmission Controller (TCU / Trans): Communication lost with the Instrumentation Controller Unit (ICU)

Issue description

The Controller Area Network (CAN) data bus signal between the logging module and the tractor's instrument cluster has been interrupted, corrupted, or completely lost.

Applies to these machines

  • Magnum
  • Steiger T4B
  • Case IH Steiger & STX Series
  • Case IH Magnum Series

Check the cause

  1. Verify power and ground by checking the fuses and relays supplying power to the ICU (typically mounted on the front right-hand cab A-post/ROPS post).

  2. Inspect connectors at both the Transmission Controller (TCU) and the ICU to ensure they are fully seated, undamaged, and pins are tight.

  3. Test the CAN bus harness using a multimeter to check for continuity, open circuits, or short-to-ground conditions on the wires between the TCU and ICU.

  4. Check for associated codes indicating other modules (like the Armrest Control Module or Engine Governor) are offline, which points to a main CAN bus wiring fault rather than a failed ICU.

Repair steps

  1. Disconnect Power

Always disconnect the battery before servicing CAN bus wiring or control modules.

  2. Repair Wiring

If your multimeter tests revealed an open or shorted wire in the harness between the TCU and ICU, repair the damaged section of the harness or replace the affected harness segment.

  3. Replace or Repair the ICU

If the wiring, power, and grounds are all intact, the ICU itself has likely suffered an internal failure. Remove the ICU from the cab A-post. You can either install a new/remanufactured OEM cluster or send the original unit to an agricultural electronics repair specialist (such as Ag Express Electronics) for circuit board repair.

  4. Reassemble and Power Up

Reconnect the battery and turn the key to the ON position.

  5. Clear Codes

Use the Case IH Electronic Service Tool (EST) laptop to clear the inactive 2819 fault code from the Transmission Controller's memory. (In some models, the code will move to an inactive state automatically once communication is restored).

  6. Verify Operation

Ensure the instrument cluster powers up, displays data correctly, and that the transmission shifts normally without throwing the code again.
