Case IH 282 – Engine Control Module (ECM): Rear Pumping element is failed

Issue description

The Engine Control Module (ECM) has detected a mechanical or electrical failure in the rear pumping element of the fuel injection pump (Cummins Accumulator Pump System (CAPS)). When this code is active, the engine may experience a power derate, a rough idle/misfire, hard starting, or white smoke.

Check the cause

  1. Verify low-pressure fuel supply: check for algae or contamination in the tanks, replace fuel filters, and verify the electric lift pump (transfer pump) is functioning properly.

  2. Test the control valve solenoids (stators) on top of the accumulator by electronically cutting out the rear solenoid using a diagnostic tool to see if the engine idle smooths out.

  3. Inspect the transient suppressor diode, which protects the CAPS pump's electronics from voltage spikes.

  4. Check for accompanying codes such as 273/274 (Rear Pumping Valve Circuit) or 328 (Rear Pumping Element) to further confirm a failure in the rear section.

Repair steps

  1. Disconnect Power

    Disconnect the positive and negative battery terminals to protect the ECM and machine electronics.

  2. Clean the Area

    Thoroughly wash the engine area around the CAPS pump to prevent dirt from entering the open fuel lines.

  3. Remove Lines and Harnesses

    Disconnect the electrical harness connectors from the CAPS pump. Remove the high-pressure fuel lines and immediately cap all open fittings to prevent contamination.

  4. Remove the CAPS Pump

    Unbolt and remove the faulty CAPS pump from the engine gear housing.

  5. Install the Remanufactured Pump

    Mount the new/remanufactured CAPS pump to the engine, ensuring the gear timing is correct per the OEM service manual.

  6. Replace the Transient Suppressor

    You MUST install a new transient suppressor when replacing the CAPS pump. Failure to replace this component will void the warranty on the new pump and risk immediate electrical failure.

  7. Reassembly

    Reconnect all high-pressure fuel lines and electrical connectors. Reconnect the battery terminals.

  8. Prime and Clear

    Prime the fuel system by cycling the key to activate the lift pump. Start the engine, check for leaks, and use a diagnostic tool to clear the inactive fault code 282.
