2820

Case IH 2820 – Trans (Transmission / Instrumentation Controller): System pressure low possible System pressure hydraulic pump failure or leak.

Issue description

The system has detected that the hydraulic pressure has dropped below the acceptable operating threshold. This condition is typically caused by fluid starvation (low fluid or clogged filters), a significant external/internal leak, or a failing hydraulic pump that can no longer maintain adequate flow and pressure under load.

Applies to these machines

  • Magnum
  • Magnum Series (235, 250, 260, 280, 290, 310, 315, 340)
  • Steiger Series
  • Puma Series
  • Maxxum Series
  • Optum Series

Check the cause

  1. Check the hydraulic reservoir fluid level with the tractor parked on level ground. Inspect the fluid for a milky appearance (water contamination), dark color, or metal shavings.

  2. Inspect the entire hydraulic circuit for external leaks, paying close attention to the pump housing, cylinders, hoses, and control valves.

  3. Check the suction lines for restrictions, collapsed or soft hoses, and air leaks. A restriction on the suction side will starve the pump and cause pressure instability.

  4. Inspect the hydraulic filters and the suction screen inside the reservoir. Clogged filters restrict oil flow and lead to low pressure.

  5. Perform a pressure and flow test by plumbing a flow meter or a pressure gauge tee'd into the high-pressure line. Run the system at operating RPM with a hydraulic function dead-headed and compare the reading to the manufacturer's specification.

Repair steps

  1. Preparation

Park the tractor on level ground, lower all implements (header, loader, hitches) to relieve system pressure, and shut off the engine.

  2. Resolve Leaks & Restrictions

If external leaks or collapsed hoses were found during diagnosis, replace the damaged hoses, O-rings, or seals.

  3. Service Filters

Drain the hydraulic fluid (if degraded or contaminated). Replace the hydraulic filters and clean or replace the suction screen.

  4. Pump Replacement

Disconnect the hydraulic lines from the pump. Remove the hydraulic pump drive housing/mounting bolts. Extract the worn hydraulic pump and install the replacement unit. Reconnect all lines, ensuring new O-rings are used on the fittings to prevent air leaks.

  5. Refill and Test

Refill the hydraulic reservoir with genuine Case IH recommended hydraulic fluid. Start the tractor, operate the hydraulic functions to bleed air from the system, and verify that the pressure holds steady under load without throwing the 2820 code.
