Case IH 2821 – Transmission Control Unit (TRANS): Transmission System Pressure Low fault

Issue description

The transmission system pressure drops below the minimum required operating threshold. Specifically, the condition is met when the system pressure remains below 19.3 bar (280 psi) while the engine is running at greater than 1400 RPM for a continuous 30 seconds.

Applies to these machines

  • Magnum
  • Steiger T4B
  • Case IH Magnum Series: 235, 260, 290, 315, 340 (Series 4)
  • Case IH STX Steiger Series: 350 to 600 horsepower models (including Quadtrac variants)

Check the cause

  1. Verify that the transmission/hydraulic fluid is at the correct level, as low fluid is the most common cause of pressure drops.

  2. Inspect the transmission housing, hydraulic lines, and valve blocks for any visible external leaks.

  3. Locate the transmission system pressure sensor and ensure connectors are fully seated, pins are in the correct position, and the wiring harness has continuity with no open circuits or shorts to ground/power.

  4. Perform a mechanical pressure test using a manual hydraulic pressure gauge to verify actual system pressure (should be above 280 psi at >1400 RPM).

Repair steps

  1. Secure the Machine

Park the tractor on a level surface, engage the parking brake, and turn off the engine.

  2. Address Fluid/Leaks

Top off the transmission fluid if it is low. If a ruptured line or leaking seal was found during the visual inspection, replace the affected hydraulic line or seal.

  3. Repair Wiring (If Applicable)

If the diagnostic checks revealed a short or break in the wiring harness between the sensor and the Transmission ECU, repair or replace the damaged section of the harness.

  4. Replace the Pressure Sensor

If the wiring is intact but the sensor is reading out of range (or failing to read actual mechanical pressure), unthread the faulty transmission pressure sensor and install a new one.

  5. Replace the Hydraulic Pump (Worst-Case)

If the sensor is accurate and there are no external leaks, the transmission system hydraulic pump has likely failed or there is a severe internal pressure leak. The pump will need to be removed and rebuilt or replaced.

  6. Clear Codes and Test

Use an Electronic Service Tool (EST) to clear the fault code. Start the tractor, bring the engine RPM above 1400, and operate it for more than 30 seconds to ensure the code does not return and the pressure remains stable.

Parts you might need

(3)
  • Transmission System Pressure Sensor

Fitment: Case IH Magnum / Steiger transmission valve block.

  • Transmission Hydraulic Pump

Required only if mechanical failure is diagnosed.

  • Case IH Hy-Tran Ultraction (or equivalent OEM transmission/hydraulic fluid)

Required for topping off the system.
