Case IH 284 – Engine Control Module (ECM): Engine Speed/Position Sensor (Crankshaft) Supply Voltage Circuit - Voltage Below Normal or Shorted to Low Source

Issue description

The Engine Control Module (ECM) has detected that the +5 volt sensor supply circuit to the engine speed sensor is out of range low. This typically happens when the supply line has shorted to ground or a return wire. When this fault is active, the engine may run rough, experience low power, emit white smoke, fail to start, or shut down completely.

Check the cause

  1. Inspect the engine harness and ECM connector pins for visible damage, moisture, or corrosion.

  2. Disconnect the engine harness from the ECM to isolate whether the short to ground is inside the ECM, in the wiring harness, or inside the sensor itself.

Repair steps

  1. Turn the keyswitch to the OFF position.

  2. Disconnect the engine harness from the ECM.

  3. Inspect the engine harness and ECM connector pins for pushed-back pins or shorts.

  4. Turn the keyswitch to the ON position.

  5. Connect your electronic service tool (e.g., INSITE or Case IH EST) and read the active fault codes after 30 seconds.

  6. Evaluate the Code.

If Fault Code 284 is STILL ACTIVE: The engine speed sensor supply line has an internal short to ground inside the module. You must replace the ECM. If Fault Code 284 is INACTIVE: The ECM is fine. The short is located in the engine harness or the engine speed sensor itself. Repair or replace the engine harness or the sensor.

  7. Validate the Repair.

Reconnect all components. Turn the keyswitch ON, start the engine, and let it idle for 1 minute.

  8. Verify using the service tool that Fault Code 284 has changed to INACTIVE, then clear the inactive fault codes from the ECM memory.
