Case IH 2849 – Transmission Control Unit (TCU): The park brake driver has detected an open circuit condition

Issue description

The control module is attempting to send an electrical signal to the park brake actuator or solenoid, but the electrical loop is broken. This is typically caused by a disconnected wiring harness, a severed wire, corroded connector pins, or an internally failed (open) solenoid coil inside the park brake actuator.

Check the cause

  1. Visually inspect connectors at the park brake actuator and the TCU for secure connection, damage, and tight pins

  2. Perform a harness continuity test by disconnecting the relevant harness connectors (e.g., C066 from TCU and C686 at actuator)

  3. Measure resistance between the TCU signal pin and the actuator connector pin to check for an open circuit (infinite resistance/OL)

  4. Check the same pins for a short to ground

  5. Test the resistance across the pins of the park brake actuator solenoid itself to check for an internally failed open coil

Repair steps

  1. Secure the Machine

    Park the tractor on level ground and securely chock the wheels, as you will be disabling and working on the parking brake system.

  2. Disconnect Power

    Disconnect the negative battery cable to prevent accidental short circuits while working on the transmission wiring.

  3. Inspect and Clean Connectors

    Locate the park brake actuator on the transmission housing. Unplug the connector and inspect for pushed-out pins, water intrusion, or corrosion. Clean with contact cleaner and reseat. If the code clears, the issue was a poor connection.

  4. Repair the Harness

    If the diagnostic continuity test revealed a broken wire between the TCU and the actuator, trace the harness along the transmission to find the chafe mark or break. Splice and seal the wire using OEM-approved heat-shrink connectors.

  5. Replace the Actuator/Solenoid

    If the harness is good but the actuator solenoid coil is open, unbolt the defective park brake actuator assembly or solenoid valve from the transmission. Install the new unit and torque to OEM specifications.

  6. Reassemble and Clear Codes

    Reconnect the battery. Use the Electronic Service Tool (EST) or the in-cab display monitor to clear the inactive 2849 fault code. Test the park brake engagement and disengagement to ensure proper operation.
