Case IH 285 – Engine Control Module (ECM) / Engine Controller: J1939 Parameter was set to be multiplexed, but not received (timeout error)
Issue description
The Engine Control Module (ECM) expected to receive information from a multiplexed device (such as a switch, accelerator pedal, or sensor) over the SAE J1939 datalink from the Vehicle Electronic Control Unit (VECU) or Transmission ECU. The fault triggers when the ECM does not receive this valid J1939 message soon enough (typically a timeout of more than 1 second) or does not receive it at all, causing the ECM to use a default state.

Check the cause
Verify communication is possible between the electronic service tool and the ECM
Inspect connectors on the ECM, VECU, and multiplexed devices (specifically 3-pin J1939 connectors) for bent, broken, pushed back, or expanded pins
Test the J1939 datalink wiring harness for open circuits, short circuits to power, or short circuits to ground
Verify multiplexing configuration settings in the ECM to ensure component enables and source addresses match the OEM VECU (especially if recently replaced or re-flashed)
Repair steps
Connect Service Tool
Turn the keyswitch to the ON position and connect your electronic service tool.
Identify the Missing Component
Read the fault codes and parameter data to identify exactly which multiplexed device (e.g., cruise control, throttle, service brake switch) is failing to communicate.
Isolate the Harness
Disconnect the VECU(s) from the J1939 backbone harness. Disconnect the multiplexed devices from the VECU(s).
Repair Wiring/Pins
If you find damaged pins or wiring in the J1939 datalink harness during your diagnostic checks, repair or replace the affected harness, 3-pin connector, or ECM/VECU pins.
Restore ECM Configuration or Replace VECU
If the wiring is intact but the ECM was recently flashed, restore the correct Features and Parameters template so the source addresses match the VECU. If the OEM VECU is not broadcasting the message due to a hardware failure, the VECU itself must be replaced.
Validate the Repair
Reconnect all components. Turn the keyswitch ON, start the engine, and let it idle for 1 minute.
Clear Codes
Using the electronic service tool, verify that Fault Code 285 is now inactive. Erase the inactive fault codes to complete the repair.
