Case IH 2852 – Transmission Controller (Trans / TCU): The Park Brake is stuck on by no electrical power supplied to the solenoid when driver is commanded on. Possible service brake bottom brake switches open.

Issue description

The system has commanded the parking brake to disengage (or engage) so the tractor can move, but the controller detects an open circuit or zero voltage reaching the park brake solenoid. Because the solenoid requires electrical power to open the hydraulic valve and release the spring-applied parking brake, the transmission remains locked in park. The bottom switches on the service brake pedal may also be stuck open, interrupting the circuit.

Check the cause

  1. Check the fuse panel for blown fuses related to the transmission control or park brake lock circuit.

  2. Verify the Forward/Neutral/Reverse/Park (FNRP) shuttle switch is functioning correctly and not throwing secondary illogical position codes (like Trans 51 or 59).

  3. Test the service brake bottom switches for continuity to ensure they are not stuck in the open position.

  4. Disconnect the electrical harness at the park brake solenoid and use a multimeter to verify if 12V power and a good ground are present when the key is ON and the brake is commanded to release.

  5. Inspect the wiring harness between the transmission controller and the solenoid for chafing, rodent damage, or corroded connector pins if no voltage is present.

Repair steps

  1. Secure the Machine

    Park the tractor on level ground and install wheel chocks. Because you are working on the parking brake system, the machine could roll if hydraulic pressure is unexpectedly restored.

  2. Locate the Park Brake Valve Block

    Depending on the model, this is typically located on the right side of the tractor under the cab/battery box area, or directly on the transmission housing.

  3. Address Wiring/Switch Issues

    If your diagnostic checks revealed an open service brake switch or a broken wire, replace the faulty switch or splice/repair the damaged wire harness.

  4. Replace the Solenoid

    If power is present but it fails to actuate: Clean the area around the park brake valve block to prevent dirt from entering the hydraulic system. Disconnect the electrical connector from the solenoid. Remove the retaining nut holding the solenoid coil to the valve stem. Slide the old solenoid off (if the internal valve spool is also sticking, you may need to unthread the entire cartridge valve). Slide the new OEM solenoid onto the stem and torque the retaining nut to spec. Reconnect the electrical harness.

  5. Clear Codes and Test

    Turn the battery disconnect back on, clear the transmission fault codes via the tractor's display monitor, and cycle the FNRP lever to confirm the park brake engages and disengages smoothly.
