Case IH 287 – ENG (Engine Controller / Engine ECU): Multiplexing throttle parameter and a data error was received - data invalid

Issue description

This code indicates that the Engine Controller is receiving invalid data over the multiplexed network (J1939 CAN bus) regarding the throttle position parameter. Instead of a direct analog signal, the throttle position is sent as a digital message from the cab controls to the engine. When the engine ECU receives a corrupted, out-of-range, or invalid data packet for this parameter, it logs code 287.

Applies to these machines

  • MX Magnum
  • STX Steiger
  • Case IH Magnum
  • Case IH Puma
  • Case IH Steyr CVT
  • Case IH CS
  • Case IH CVX
  • Case IH Farmall
  • Case IH Combine Harvesters (AFX series)

Check the cause

  1. Check for Cab/Armrest Controller Codes (e.g., Armrest 18010 or 18011) to see if a physical sensor has failed

  2. Inspect physical hand throttle and foot pedal potentiometers for proper voltage sweeps and ensure there are no dead spots

  3. Inspect the CAN Bus (J1939) wiring between the Armrest/Cab controller and the Engine ECU for opens, shorts to ground, or corrosion

  4. Verify the Engine ECU and Armrest controller configurations are correctly set to expect a multiplexed throttle signal

Repair steps

  1. Connect diagnostic tool

Connect a diagnostic service tool (e.g., Case IH Electronic Service Tool) to the machine's diagnostic port.

  2. Read fault codes

Read all active and logged fault codes across all modules, paying special attention to the Armrest and Engine controllers.

  3. Replace throttle potentiometer

If Armrest throttle sensor faults are present (indicating the physical sensor has failed), remove the cab trim to access the hand throttle lever or foot pedal assembly. Replace the faulty throttle potentiometer.

  4. Check CAN bus wiring

If no physical sensor faults are present in the cab controllers, use a multimeter to perform a continuity and resistance check on the J1939 CAN bus lines between the cab controller and the Engine ECU.

  5. Repair wiring

Repair any damaged wiring, chafed harnesses, or corroded pins in the bulkhead connectors.

  6. Verify repair

Reassemble the components, clear the fault codes using the service tool, and test drive the tractor through its full throttle range to verify the repair.
