Case IH 2874 – Transmission (Trans): Park brakes commanded on and gear is engaged and there is no park brake request from calibration

Issue description

The controller is seeing a logical contradiction where the transmission is in gear and the park brake is being commanded on, but the system is not in a calibration mode that would request this behavior. The manufacturer explicitly identifies this specific condition as a software logic error (a bug) rather than a mechanical failure.

Applies to these machines

  • Magnum
  • Steiger T4B
  • Case IH Magnum Series 4 (Models 235, 260, 290, 315, 340, 370)
  • Case IH STX Steiger tractors (350 to 600 HP)

Check the cause

  1. Connect the Case IH Electronic Service Tool (EST) to the machine's diagnostic port.

  2. Verify that code 2874 is active or heavily logged in the Transmission controller.

  3. Check the current software revision level on the Transmission controller.

  4. Search the CNH eTIM (Electronic Technical Information Manual) or ASIST database for any active Technical Service Bulletins (TSBs) regarding transmission software updates for this specific code.

Repair steps

  1. Connect Diagnostic Tool

Hook up the CNH Electronic Service Tool (EST) to the tractor.

  2. Update Software

Flash the Transmission Control Module (TCM) with the latest software payload available from the manufacturer. This update contains the patch to resolve the logic bug causing the false park brake command.

  3. Recalibrate

Once the software is successfully updated, perform a full transmission and park brake calibration using the EST to ensure the new software learns the clutch and brake engagement points.

  4. Clear Codes

Clear the inactive 2874 fault code from the module's memory.

  5. Test Operation

Start the tractor, engage a gear, and verify that the park brake releases properly and the code does not return.

Parts you might need

(1)
  • Transmission Control Module (TCM) / Transmission ECU

Varies heavily by exact model year and serial number break; must be verified via the CNH Next Generation Parts Catalog (NGPC) using the machine's PIN. If a new module is purchased, it will arrive blank and will still require the EST to program the software and calibrate it to the tractor.
