Case IH 288 – Engine Control Module (ECM / ENG): SAE J1939 Multiplexing Remote Throttle Parameter and a Data Error was Received - Data Invalid

Issue description

The OEM Vehicle Electronic Control Unit (VECU) has detected a fault—such as a shorted high or shorted low condition—on the remote throttle signal wire or the remote throttle enable switch. The VECU then transmits this error status over the SAE J1939 datalink to the engine controller.

Check the cause

  1. Verify the physical condition of the remote throttle enable switch and the remote accelerator pedal/lever connected to the OEM VECU.

  2. Inspect the wiring harness and connectors between the remote throttle potentiometer, the VECU, and the Engine ECM for chafed wires, corrosion, or moisture.

  3. Ensure the J1939 datalink wiring is intact, as the ECM relies on this network to receive the multiplexed throttle position data.

  4. Use the Case IH Electronic Service Tool (EST) or Cummins INSITE to monitor the multiplexed components and verify if the VECU is successfully transmitting the remote throttle position message.

Repair steps

  1. Connect Diagnostic Tool

    Plug in your diagnostic scanner to confirm Fault Code 288 is active and check for any accompanying VECU or J1939 communication codes (such as Code 285).

  2. Test the Circuit

    Disconnect the remote throttle sensor/potentiometer. Use a multimeter to check the signal wire, 5-volt reference, and ground circuits back to the VECU for continuity and shorts to ground or power.

  3. Repair Wiring

    If a short or open circuit is found in the harness between the remote throttle and the VECU, repair or replace the damaged section of the wiring harness.

  4. Replace the Sensor

    If the wiring tests good but the VECU is still detecting a shorted high/low value directly from the component, the remote throttle potentiometer/sensor has failed internally and must be replaced.

  5. Clear Codes and Verify

    After repairing the wiring or replacing the sensor, turn the keyswitch ON and let the engine warm up. Run the engine for at least 1 minute to allow the ECM to recognize the valid signal and change the fault code to an inactive state. Use the diagnostic tool to clear the inactive code.
