Case IH 2880 – ATC (Automatic Temperature Control) module: Blower motor driver short to VBAT/GND or open circuit

Issue description

The Automatic Temperature Control (ATC) module has detected a critical electrical failure in the blower motor driver (often a solid-state blower motor resistor or control module) circuit. The diagnostic logic has recognized a short to VBAT, a short to GND, or an open circuit.

Check the cause

  1. Inspect the blower motor driver/resistor module and its electrical connector. Look for corrosion, melted plastic, heat damage, or loose pins.

  2. With the key ON and the fan commanded to various speeds, verify battery voltage at the resistor input and confirm near-zero ohms to chassis ground. If power is missing, trace the fuses and relays.

  3. Command the fan to HIGH. If the circuit is designed to bypass the resistor on high, you should see near-battery voltage at the motor. If it does not work on high, suspect the blower relay, the motor itself, or the power feed.

  4. Use a clamp ammeter on the blower motor positive lead at HIGH speed. If the motor draws significantly higher amperage than the service manual specification, the motor is failing. An over-spec motor will overheat and repeatedly destroy the blower motor driver.

Repair steps

  1. Disconnect Power

    Cut the battery power/disconnect the battery before starting electrical HVAC repairs to prevent shorting the 24V/12V circuit, which can fry the control board or thermostat.

  2. Locate the Component

    Access the blower motor driver/resistor. It is typically mounted directly into the HVAC air box or ductwork (often behind the dash or near the firewall) so that the system's airflow can cool the resistor elements.

  3. Remove the Driver

    Disconnect the electrical harness connector from the driver. Remove the mounting screws and pull the module out of the HVAC housing.

  4. Replace the Blower Motor (If Necessary)

    If your diagnostic tests showed the blower motor was drawing excessive current, binding, or seized, you must replace the blower motor assembly alongside the driver. Failing to do so will cause the new driver to burn out immediately.

  5. Install New Parts

    Insert the new blower motor driver into the housing and secure it with the mounting screws.

  6. Reconnect and Test

    Reconnect the electrical harness, ensuring the pins are tight. Restore battery power and test the HVAC system on all fan speed settings to confirm proper operation.
