2900

Case IH 2900 – Transmission Control Unit (TCU): Torque sensor Gap is on the larger end of the tolerance (CCH Only)

Issue description

The physical gap of the transmission torque sensor has exceeded the upper limit of its normal operating tolerance. When the gap is too large, the sensor cannot reliably read the torque, which can trigger transmission protection protocols such as dropping to neutral or limiting power.

Applies to these machines

  • Steiger T4B
  • Case IH Magnum 235
  • Case IH Magnum 250
  • Case IH Magnum 260
  • Case IH Magnum 280
  • Case IH Magnum 290
  • Case IH Magnum 310
  • Case IH Magnum 340

Check the cause

  1. Physically inspect the torque sensor mounting to see if it has vibrated loose or if the gap has widened beyond factory tolerance

  2. Test the sensor's power supply to ensure it is receiving a steady 5V reference (related code 2903 triggers if voltage drops below 4.8V)

  3. Check the transmission controller fuses for a blown fuse causing low 12V supply to the transmission modules

  4. Check if code 2902 is also logged, which indicates the torque sensor has declared an internal failure

Repair steps

  1. Locate the Torque Sensor

Locate the torque sensor on the transmission housing/drivetrain (often near the flywheel or hydraulic pump drive gear, depending on the exact model configuration).

  2. Inspect the Harness

Disconnect the 3-pin female electrical connector (Part # 87693712) and inspect for corrosion, moisture, or damaged pins.

  3. Adjust the Gap

If the sensor mount allows for adjustment or shimming, adjust the sensor so the gap falls back into the normal tolerance range.

  4. Replace the Sensor

If the gap cannot be corrected, the sensor housing is physically damaged, or an internal fault (Code 2902) is present, unbolt the old sensor and install a replacement.

  5. Re-calibrate

After installing the new sensor, clear the fault codes from the Transmission TCU. You may need to run a transmission calibration procedure via the tractor's display monitor to ensure the clutches and new sensor are synced.
