Issue description

This code indicates that the physical gap between the transmission torque sensor and its target wheel (often located near the flywheel or transmission input) has exceeded the optimal operating tolerance. When the gap is too large, the sensor cannot accurately measure the drivetrain torque output, which can lead to erratic signal readings, poor engine load management, and unstable ECU feedback.

Check the cause

  1. Inspect the sensor mounting to see if it has backed out of its mounting hole or if the retaining hardware is loose, which would artificially increase the gap.

  2. Inspect the 3-pin electrical connector (Connector 1199F) at the torque sensor for corrosion, moisture, or backed-out pins.

  3. Verify the sensor's power supply is receiving a steady 5V reference (related fault code 2903 triggers if supply voltage drops below 4.8 volts).

  4. Remove the sensor and inspect the mounting bore and the target wheel for debris or metal shavings that could interfere with the magnetic/magnetoelastic reading.

Repair steps

  1. Preparation

    Park the tractor on a level surface, turn off the engine, relieve any hydraulic pressure, and disconnect the battery.

  2. Locate the Sensor

    Locate the torque sensor on the transmission/flywheel housing.

  3. Disconnect

    Unplug the 3-pin electrical connector from the sensor.

  4. Removal

    Remove the retaining bolt(s) securing the sensor to the housing and carefully pull the sensor out.

  5. Inspection

    Inspect the target wheel inside the housing for damage or excessive runout. Clean the mounting surface thoroughly so the new sensor seats perfectly flat.

  6. Installation

    Install the new torque sensor (or reinstall the old one if a missing shim/spacer was the issue). Ensure it is seated fully to establish the correct factory gap.

  7. Reassembly

    Tighten the retaining bolt to the specified torque and reconnect the 3-pin wiring harness.

  8. Calibration/Testing

    Reconnect the battery. Use a diagnostic scan tool (like the CNH Electronic Service Tool) to clear the 2900 fault code. Test drive the tractor under load to ensure the transmission shifts correctly and the code does not return.
