Issue description

This code indicates that the electronic signal being sent from the drivetrain/transmission torque sensor to the control module is erratic or out of the expected operational tolerance. It is not registering as a standard electrical fault, but rather an implausible reading that the system cannot validate.

Check the cause

  1. Check Sensor Gap: Verify the physical installation of the torque sensor. A loose sensor or incorrect air gap can cause the erratic signal.

  2. Check Supply Voltage: Verify the sensor is receiving a steady 5V reference from the TCU.

  3. Inspect Wiring and Connectors: Check the wiring harness between the transmission torque sensor and the TCU for chafing, corrosion, or loose connector pins.

  4. Check for Internal Sensor Faults: Look for the presence of code 2902, which confirms the sensor itself has failed internally.

Repair steps

  1. Power Down and Access

    Turn off the machine, engage the parking brake, and disconnect the battery ground. Locate the transmission torque sensor on the drivetrain/transmission housing.

  2. Harness Disconnection

    Carefully unplug the OEM connector from the torque sensor. Inspect the terminals for moisture, dirt, or bent pins. Clean with contact cleaner if necessary.

  3. Remove the Sensor

    Unbolt and remove the faulty torque sensor from the transmission housing.

  4. Install the New Sensor

    Insert the replacement torque sensor. If the sensor utilizes shims or requires a specific depth/gap setting, ensure it is installed strictly to the service manual's gap tolerance to prevent code 2900 from triggering.

  5. Reconnect and Reassemble

    Reconnect the wiring harness, ensuring the weather-tight seal clicks into place. Reconnect the battery.

  6. Clear Codes and Calibrate

    Connect a diagnostic tool (such as the CNH Electronic Service Tool) to clear the inactive 2901 fault code. Depending on the transmission software, you may need to run a transmission controller calibration routine so the TCU can relearn the new sensor's baseline torque values.
